REVIEWS: First Drive: 2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe

May 25, 2011

According to http://www.automobilemag.com

The addition of a two-door coupe to the C-class lineup has given AMG the opportunity to expand the family of its popular C63 AMG model. Currently offered as a sedan and (in Europe) a wagon, the C63 adds a coupe variant for the 2012 model year. Mechanically, the coupe and sedan are identical, with one significant upgrade coming to both for 2012. The two-door is the same size as its four-door sibling, but its lower body, more intimate cabin, and sportier styling make it a racier distillation of the C63 formula.

Familiar motivator
The C63 coupe’s 6.2-liter V-8 is an engine that we know (and love) from the C63 sedan-and elsewhere in the AMG line-up. What do we love about it? The deep rumble on start-up, its quick bark during full-throttle upshifts, the roar as it passes by at full gallop, and of course the tremendous response, which is both linear and lag-free. But the big V-8 actually is on its way out; it has already been replaced by a smaller, 5.5-liter bi-turbo V-8 in the CL63 and the S63, the blown 5.5 powers the new CLS63 AMG, and for 2012 it steps in for the 6.2-liter in the E63 as well. Why not use it here? The answer, from AMG’s head of product development Tobias Moers, is that the 5.5-liter biturbo makes more torque than the smaller C-class chassis can handle (516 pound-feet in the E63). ……………………..

“No plans to offer it here,” said Mercedes-Benz USA spokesman Rob Moran in an e-mailed reply to anInside Line query.

The seven-passenger GL-Class Grand Edition, a luxury off-roader, ranges in price from $112,999 for the GL350 CDI 4Matic BlueEfficiency to $139,657 for the GL500 4Matic.

Cosmetic upgrades include light-alloy wheels, two-tone leather seats in a new design and a wood-and-leather steering wheel in black ash. Mercedes Expect Their Chinese Sales to Grow 60% in 2011

January 18, 2011

According to http://www.autoevolution.com,

Daimler AG’s Chinese joint venture with Beijing Automotive Industrial Holding Co (BAIC), Beijing Benz Automotive Co, announced today it is targeting for an annual sales figure of 80,000 vehicles in China, some 60 percent more than last year.

In order to keep up with the increase in demand, the German carmaker is reducing the proportion of imported vehicles in China to 30 percent compared to the previous 70 percent, according to Daimler AG Chief Executive Dieter Zetsche. To achieve this major sales growth, Daimler and BAIC have begun making plans for the introduction of four new models into the country before 2015.

One of these cars is the Mercedes Benz GLK-Klasse, which should arrive on the market by the end of this year. The other three will be new models that are yet to be released an should be built on completely redesigned platforms.

The fact that a luxury carmaker is doing well in China should come as no surprise to anyone who is following the international press, which is showing an increase in the country’s middle-class wealth, as well as high demand for western luxury goods.

Last year, Mercedes-Benz sold more than 50,000 vehicles in China, accounting for 35% of its global sales figure. The country is also the third and second biggest markets for the C-Klasse and E-Klasse models respectively.

Beijing Benz Automotive Co has an annual production capacity of between 80,000 and 100,000 vehicles and expects to reach an annual capacity to 300,000 units a year by 2015, according to Mark Si, executive vice president for sales and marketing.

Mercedes-Benz Atego BlueTec Gets Sustainability Award

November 28, 2010

According to autoevolution

It has been a busy week for German manufacturer Mercedes-Benz when it comes to receiving awards. On Friday, the carmaker was named Germany’s strongest brand by the ADAC AutomarxX, the world’s second largest automobile club. Now, one of its products, the Atego BlueTec hybrid, received its own recognition.

The German Sustainability Award Foundation decided to give the title to Mercedes-Benz’s product because of the fact that the technology it uses allows for a reduction of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by between ten and 15 percent.

“Daimler has the clear aim of maintaining its pioneering role even in the new automotive environment,”
said Dieter Zetsche, Daimler’s CEO when receiving the award.

“That’s why we already are the manufacturer with the biggest range of alternative drive systems on the road - from the small electric smart to hybrid trucks for distribution services.”

The Atego BlueTec is powered by a 4.8l four-cylinder diesel engine which develops 218 horsepower. A water-cooled electric motor with a maximum output of 44 kW, which draws its power from high-energy lithium-ion batteries is there to help the engine.

The engine also features an automatic start-stop function which helps it reduce fuel consumption, emissions, and noise.  To be more precise, the fuel consumption is 15 percent lower copared to regular diesels.

Mercedes-Benz will begin delivering the hybrid Atego in 2011. 50 of them will be deployed to German customers for testing purposes.

“The Atego BlueTec Hybrid’s performance speaks for itself. The truck is exceptionally quiet, produces very little emissions, and is just as reliable, safe, and versatile as a conventionally powered Mercedes-Benz Atego.”
